The first edition of this great book was published in 1999, having in mind that orthodontic treatment is undergoing constant change, with a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach; dental treatment in the adult patient is one of the examples of this kind of approach. The book “Tratamiento Ortodontico en el Adulto” written by Dr. Julia Harfin, on its second edition, had the collaboration of very important Latin-American leaders in their field with new chapters such as histology of dental movement with a sound biology base, including cell biology and orthodontic metallurgy.
“The clinical cases that Dr. Harfin shows in this second edition are more than 90% new, and they are a silent witness for the reader who doesn’t know the language.”

A chapter dedicated to oral pathology, shows the orthodontist how to differentiate the different lesions that compromise the oral mucosa. Besides, the chapters that appeared in the first edition, mention the needed periodontal considerations, as well as what happens to the soft tissue, especially the interdental papillae alter orthodontic movement. A chapter clarifies the diagnosis and treatment planning on patients where an extraction of a single lower incisor was decided. A chapter dedicated to distraction osteogenesis recognizes the importance of this surgical technique in the orthodontic treatment of adult patients. A new chapter dedicated to lingual appliances, shows the different possibilities and results that in some patients are the only alternative, due to their esthetic considerations. In this new edition, a new chapter that treats the relationship between patient and orthodontist could not be missed. This relation develops over the long time period that most of the adult patients require with their interdisciplinary treatment.
