Instant Chairside Fabrication of Bite Block for Crossbite Correction

Advantages

  • Easy and instant chairside fabrication.
  • More precise than other bite blocks, as it allows bite opening of desired amount as much required.
  • Requires minimal trimming.

Steps for fabrication:

1.      Armamentarium: modelling wax sheet, B.P. blade, Micro torch, impression tray and 22 gauge stainless steel wire. (A)

2.      Soften the wax and make a roll for bite registration of posterior teeth. (B)

3.      Place both the wax roll in mouth and ask the patient to bite till the desired position to open the bite for crossbite correction. (C,D)

4.      Remove the wax block and carve off the excess wax. (E)

5.      Make the alginate impression with wax blocks in the mouth. (F)

6.      Make two handles of stainless steel wire with retentive tags. (G)

7.      Mix alginate and pour over the posterior region of the impression including wax blocks, insert the handles over the poured alginate and allow it to set. (H)

8.      Remove the set alginate blocks with the help of the handles. (I)

9.      Remove the wax blocks from the impression tray. (J)

10. Use cold cure acrylic in dough stage and pour into the impression tray in place of the wax blocks, place the alginate blocks and tie them together. (K)

11.  Once acrylic is set, remove the acrylic bite blocks and do final finishing and polishing. Cement the acrylic bite blocks in the patient’s mouth. (L,M)
