Orthodontic appliances or parts of orthodonticappliances have caused problems for the patients and orthodontists. Some are less severe like Discomfort, Mouth Sores and Irritation of Lips or Cheeks to more severe problems like Swallowing or Aspiration of appliances or its parts. The type of appliances that have causedproblems and their clinical management are discussed. Suggestions are made to try and avoid theproblems that were encountered in the literature in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment.

Modified Transpalatal Arch for Molar Intrusion

Molar extrusion is a common problem in adults. This problem arises when posterior teeth are lost to caries or other causes and is not restored immediately. If the extrusion is due to the loss of opposing teeth, correction usually involves intrusion of extruded teeth followed by prosthetic replacement of the missing teeth. Grinding the crown is a quick way to correct molar extrusion. But, if considerable shortening of the overerupted teeth is required, it shoul d first be treated endodontically.

Sagittal and transverse discrepancies often coexist in skeletal Class II malocclusions. Orthopedic growth modification can work well in such cases, provided that the remaining pubertal growth is adequate and that the clinician can time treatment to coincide with the peak growth period.

However, the safety of triclosan has been questioned in regard to environmental and human health. While the companies that manufacture products containing this chemical claim that it is safe, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has registered it as a pesticide.
